First Solar Inc. recognized with Safety Innovations award
Awards recognize employers that develop workplace safety innovations
COLUMBUS - First Solar Inc. of Perrysburg (Wood Co.), today took second place in the Ohio Bureau of Workers' Compensation (BWC) Safety
Innovations Competition, which recognizes Ohio employers that have developed innovative solutions to reduce workplace injuries and illnesses.
The award was presented during the Safety Congress & Expo 2015, BWC’s annual three-day occupational safety, health and workers' compensation conference.
"I am continually impressed with Ohio employers' commitment to keeping their workers safe on the job, and their creativity in addressing
safety concerns specific to their operations," said BWC Administrator/CEO Steve Buehrer. "Safety Innovations award winners not only establish
outstanding safety programming, but they also find innovative ways to improve safety and productivity by creating new solutions where none exist."
The Safety Innovations competition was introduced in 2012 at the Safety Congress and Expo. Twelve semifinalists were selected from the 53 companies
that entered the competition and the five finalists are showcasing their innovations at Safety Congress this week. A panel of independent judges
evaluated and scored the innovations based on a number of criteria, including risk reduction, innovation, return on investment, potential for the
innovation to be utilized by other employers, and presentation quality.
First Solar develops, finances, engineers, constructs, and currently operates many of the world’s largest grid-connected photovoltaic power
plants. The company worked with its supplier to change the way it delivers rolls of material it uses in the manufacturing process.
The change reduced the risk of contusions, pinch and crush injuries, and strains to employees who work with the rolls of material.
First Solar will receive a $5,000 cash prize along with its second place award.
