BWC to Offer Continuing Education Course on the Treatment of Amputees

COLUMBUS – The Ohio Bureau of Workers’ Compensation (BWC) will sponsor a continuing education course for medical providers and other professionals on the rehabilitation process for injured workers who have suffered the loss of a limb. The course, Injured Workers Amputee Rehabilitation: A Multidisciplinary Approach, will be offered Wednesday, July 21 from 8:45 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the William Green Building Auditorium, 30 W. Spring St. in Columbus. The course offers several continuing education credits, including Continuing Medical Education (CME) for physicians, and contact hours for nurses and rehabilitation professionals.

The focus of the course will demonstrate ways to guide a new amputee through the rehabilitation process to increase the injured worker’s potential for re-entering the workforce. Guest speaker, Christopher Holt, who lost a leg on the job as a paramedic in the Cleveland area, will discuss enhancing communications with amputee patients. Topics will also include an overview of prosthetic devices and physical and occupational therapies.

Instructors include Dr. Gary S. Clark, Chair of the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine; James Landon, BWC RN; and David J. Garcia LP and Joyce Acord LPT with the MetroHealth Rehabilitation Institute of Ohio.
