Meet Intake Specialist Cathy January Employee of the Month

And our first 2014 employee of the month of is . . . (drum roll, please) . . . Cathy Dunham of the Portsmouth Service Office!

As an intake specialist, Cathy makes the initial determinations on all new claims that come into the Portsmouth Customer Service Office. Recently tasked with handling all of Portsmouth’s intake caseload — a job that normally required two intake specialists — she did double the work without protest.

“Over that time frame she did not complain or ask for help,” says Portsmouth Customer Service Office Manager Scottie Powell, Cathy’s EOM nominator. “Even though she was faced with an overwhelming workload, she still made all intake determinations before the 28 day deadline.”

Not only did Cathy, a 22-year BWC employee, do the work of two people, she did it very well.

“Now, one would think that with the extra work, her quality of work would fall — it did not,” he says. “Cathy is extremely detailed, and is driven to ensure that our injured workers are taken care of.”

Cathy says she enjoys the various challenges involved in making a good claim determination; and she knows owessential such decisions are to our customers.

“It is very important to provide good customer service to the injured workers in their time of uncertainty,” she says. Cathy adds that she’s humbled by Scottie’s nomination, kind words and her EOM win. “I am a very private person — I do not like all of the attention.”

Cathy now has help in the form of a second intake specialist at Portsmouth. However, Scottie will not forget her hard work and dedication.

“She is a shining star in the Portsmouth office, and her work ethic and passion about her job is uplifting,” he says.
