Emergency to-do list

  • List phone numbers for police, fire and local ambulance services.
  • Identify the nearest hospitals and agencies that cover disasters.
  • Hold regular emergency-preparedness meetings.
  • Stock battery-operated radios, flashlights, two-way radios and medical kits, masks and latex gloves.
  • Develop a phone tree for managers.
  • Assign someone (and a backup) to call authorities in an emergency.
  • Consider purchasing business-interruption insurance.
  • Make sure employees are prepared with a contingency plan for childcare and backup medicine.
