This service offering provides a history of the notices that employers have provided
for workers' compensation coverage outside Ohio. Employers who elect coverage from
another state for employees who work outside Ohio must notify BWC in writing.
Employers may elect to obtain workers' compensation coverage from an authorized
insurer in another state if they perform work in that state. In same cases,
the other state, may require employers to obtain coverage in that state.
Note: Workers' compensation coverage from another state only applies to work
performed outside of Ohio.
Employers who have workers' compensation coverage in another state must
notify us by completing the Notice of Election to Obtain Coverage from Other States
for Employees Working Outside of Ohio (U-131). They also must provide a copy of the
policy which identifies the insurance carrier and state(s) covered. Once employers
notify us about their coverage outside Ohio, Ohio law allows them to separate
payroll for work in the other state(s).
We will operate under this notice until the employer notifies BWC about the
cancellation of other states' coverage. Employers must provide us with a copy of
the annual policy renewal to continue separating payroll for work performed in
another state.
Request to cancel other states' coverage
To cancel a U-131, employers must complete Section E of the Notification of Policy
Update (U-117).
If the other states' coverage lapse, it will not the Ohio coverage.
However, employers void the right to separate non-Ohio payroll.
