BWC awards Ohio universities funding for workplace safety research

COLUMBUS - The Ohio Bureau of Workers' Compensation (BWC) has awarded grants totaling more than $900,000 to two Ohio universities to conduct research in occupational health and safety.

The Ohio State University and the University of Cincinnati will receive funding for research projects through the Occupational Safety and Health Research Grant Program. This competitive program supports advanced research and promotes innovation in the areas of workplace safety and health to improve the productivity and competitiveness of Ohio's workforce.

"BWC is pleased to invest in fostering research at world class institutions that could shed light on how injuries may be prevented in the future," said BWC Administrator/CEO Sarah Morrison. "There is no place better than Ohio to conduct innovative research that could have an impact in workplaces across the country."

The program provides up to to $250,000 per project to Ohio's not-for-profit higher education institutions and research organizations. The duration of each research project is limited to 12 to 24 months.

Grant dollars will fund two projects at each university, including:

Ohio State University

  • $249,993 for Preventing Firefighter Injuries when Handling Obese Patients

University of Cincinnati
