BWC spotlights workplace safety in Springfield

SPRINGFIELD - Ohio Bureau of Workers' Compensation (BWC) Administrator/CEO Sarah Morrison today joined Springfield's Carmichael Machine to highlight the importance of workplace safety. The manufacturing facility demonstrated equipment it recently purchased through a BWC grant to protect its employees from injury.

"We are pleased to visit Springfield and recognize Carmichael Machine for its work to keep employees injury-free as part of our ongoing efforts to educate employers and workers about the importance of workplace safety," said Morrison. "I encourage all Ohio employers to consider the steps they can take to make their workplaces safer."

Carmichael Machine is a McGregor Metalworking Company, manufacturing precision-machined parts from all grades of metal for midrange production runs of 100 to 100,000 pieces. The company received nearly $16,400 from BWC to purchase an automatic conveyor system, a parts washer, hoist and a tilt table. The equipment has helped improve the manufacturing process and reduce the possibility of injury by assisting employees in moving parts from one process to another, eliminating repetitive lifting of heavy bins and bending to retrieve parts.

"With the help of the BWC, the Carmichael team evaluated the ergonomics of the process and developed a plan to prevent injuries," said Andrew Brougher, Carmichael's Plant Manager. "By implementing the new process, we have improved safety and efficiency and reduced worker fatigue. McGregor Metalworking values our partnership with the BWC and we enjoy our collaborative efforts to improve worker safety at all of our facilities."
