Chief Legal Counsel and Ethics Officer Kevin Cogan

Kevin joined the Ohio Bureau of Workers' Compensation as Chief Legal Counsel in October 2016.

Before joining BWC, Cogan served as a partner at Jones Day for more than 20 years. He then served as "of counsel" to the firm. He amassed years of experience as a trial lawyer, representing clients in complex civil litigation in state, federal and bankruptcy courts throughout the U.S. His areas of expertise include corporate control contests and shareholder disputes, securities fraud, insurance coverage disputes, environmental litigation, real estate controversies, and disputes relating to asset and stock purchase agreements.

In 2013, Governor John Kasich appointed Cogan to the Ohio Lake Erie Commission. He also served as special counsel to Ohio Attorney Generals Jim Petro and Mike DeWine. Cogan serves on the Central Committee of the Franklin County Republican Party and is a member of the party's Judicial Screening Committee. In addition, he's a trustee and past president of the Board of Trustees of the Franklin Park Conservatory. He was named Best Lawyers in America: 2016 Columbus "Lawyer of the Year" for litigation real estate, and recognized numerous times for bet-the-company litigation and commercial litigation.

Cogan earned his bachelor's degree from DePauw University (with high distinction; Phi Beta Kappa) and his law degree from Case Western Reserve University (Order of the Coif; Chairman, Moot Court Board).
