Interferential
Therapy
Interferential
or sympathetic therapy is a type of electrical stimulation of the peripheral
nerves that is designed to alleviate pain by inducing a systemic effect on
sympathetically induced pain. Interferential stimulation is customarily
provided on an out-patient basis for about 20 treatment sessions followed by
purchase of a home unit for the patient to self-administer the interferential
therapy for an unlimited period of time. Following a review of the literature
and coverage policies of other third party insurers, BWC has determined that
insufficient evidence exists to determine the effectiveness of “self-administered”
sympathetic therapy/ interferential therapy. BWC and the MCO will not reimburse
the rental or purchase of a therapy unit used to self-administer interferential
therapy.
